Olia Lialina - Best Effort Network

    2015

Best Effort Network is a new work from Olia Lialina, a net artist who came to prominence in 1996 with the work My Boyfriend Came Back from the War. Like Summer (2013), the work consists of a single animated sequence that considers forms of online animation beyond the GIF. While Summercreated a short animation by redirecting the user to a series of different websites, each hosting a single frame, this work uses javascript to display a sequence from discrete sections of a larger composite image.

    Wabi-Sabi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi
After centuries of incorporating artistic and Buddhist influences from China, wabi-sabi eventually evolved into a distinctly Japanese ideal. Over time, the meanings of wabi and sabi shifted to become more lighthearted and hopeful. Around 700 years ago, particularly among the Japanese nobility, understanding emptiness and imperfection was honored as tantamount to the first step to satori, or enlightenment. In today's Japan, the meaning of wabi-sabi is often condensed to "wisdom in natural simplicity." In art books, it is typically defined as "flawed beauty."[5]

Videos: set up Pixar-style rigging in Max and Maya

Monday, May 12th, 2014 | Posted by Jim Thacker

If you follow our Facebook or Twitter feeds, you may have seen a video we posted of character rigger Harry Houghton’s recreation of the control system from Pixar’s Presto software inside 3ds Max.

Presto – seen here in a demo at Nvidia’s GTC conference earlier this year – gives users the option to use a selection of the deforming surface as a control object, instead of creating conventional rig controls.

According to Houghton: “This method allows animators to work uncluttered and see a smoothed … version of the final model, and can be combined with off-viewport controls like spinners and sliders.”

Try it for yourself in 3ds Max or Maya
If you want to try for yourself, Houghton has posted a video showing how the control system is created – and a second video (top of post) demonstrating the same thing for Maya users.

Watch all three videos on Harry Houghton’s Vimeo channel

Our staff has exhibited its collective work throughout the world. Their collaboration with our students enriches the entire campus community.

The Doyle Library is home to a permanent collection of art works by faculty and staff members past and present. The interior of this building--built with funds provided by the residents of Sonoma County, via a bond measure--is well suited for exhibiting art, paintings in particular. The abundance of natural light, the large expanses of wall space and the over-all design give opportunity to showcase the various talents of those who teach, create and have contributed to SRJC in various ways. What follows is a list of the works housed in Doyle Library, including their titles, media employed, artists' names and the years the artists have served SRJC. (To view Doyle Collection artists discussing their work, go to Art Talk.)
