Wabi-Sabi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi
After centuries of incorporating artistic and Buddhist influences from China, wabi-sabi eventually evolved into a distinctly Japanese ideal. Over time, the meanings of wabi and sabi shifted to become more lighthearted and hopeful. Around 700 years ago, particularly among the Japanese nobility, understanding emptiness and imperfection was honored as tantamount to the first step to satori, or enlightenment. In today's Japan, the meaning of wabi-sabi is often condensed to "wisdom in natural simplicity." In art books, it is typically defined as "flawed beauty."[5]

Wednesday 5.3 - History Museum of Sonoma County
Fighting the Great War at Home and Abroad

  •  Howard Chandler Christy Poster

On April 2, 1917, Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of congress and declared war on Germany. After three years of anxiously following the headlines from Europe, Americans were going to war. Marking the 100th anniversary of US entry into “the Great War,” the History Museum of Sonoma County presents an exhibition exploring how the war touched so many lives, both at home and abroad.

As it reaches the century mark, the war has faded from collective memory-- simply with the passage of time and within the shadow of World War II. However, the war that lasted from 1914 until November 1918, reshaped the world and had a tremendous impact in Sonoma County. From the individual soldiers who ventured into a bigger world for the first time, to victory gardens and rationing on the home front, to the tragedy of the Spanish flu, discover the story of WWI in Sonoma County.

This exhibition features:

  • A stunning collection of World War I posters that served as instruments of persuasion
  • Artifacts of the war, from uniforms that belonged Sonoma County soldiers, to examples of trench art
  • Letters and diaries from Sonoma County

In a 1951 essay,”Prediction and Entropy of Printed English", Claude Shannon proved that treating whitespace as the 27th letter of the alphabet actually lowers uncertainty in written language, providing a clear quantifiable link between cultural practice and probabilistic cognition.

The Doyle Collection

Santa Rosa Junior College is known for its outstanding art department. Much pride is taken in the quality of instruction and the breadth of courses offered. The full-time faculty, complemented by an array of adjunct instructors, brings a diversity of skills that find expression both inside and outside of the classroom. Our staff has exhibited its collective work throughout the world. Their collaboration with our students enriches the entire campus community.

The Doyle Library is home to a permanent collection of art works by faculty and staff members past and present. The interior of this building--built with funds provided by the residents of Sonoma County, via a bond measure--is well suited for exhibiting art, paintings in particular. The abundance of natural light, the large expanses of wall space and the over-all design give opportunity to showcase the various talents of those who teach, create and have contributed to SRJC in various ways. What follows is a list of the works housed in Doyle Library, including their titles, media employed, artists' names and the years the artists have served SRJC. (To view Doyle Collection artists discussing their work, go to Art Talk.)
